As a functional medicine practitioner, I regularly check my own labs – because prevention is key. My latest results revealed something eye-opening: My vitamin D is low (23ng/mL), even though I focus on a healthy lifestyle.
Why This Matters
Vitamin D is critical for:
- Immune function (helps fight infections & autoimmunity)
- Reducing inflammation (low levels may worsen pain, fatigue, and chronic disease)
- Bone and muscle health
- Blood sugar regulation
Most conventional doctors consider 30 ng/mL “normal”, but in functional medicine, optimal levels are 50-80 ng/mL. That’s why I’m correcting mine – and why you might need to check yours.
What I’m Doing to Fix It
- Sun Exposure – More midday sunlight, as UVB rays trigger natural vitamin D production.
- Supplementation – Adding vitamin D3 with K2 for better absorption.
- Testing & Tracking – Retesting in a few months to ensure I reach optimal levels.
What About You?
Many people are low in vitamin D and don’t know it. If you struggle with:
- Fatigue
- Frequent colds
- Joint pain
- Mood issues
…..it may be time to check your levels and optimize your health.
