My Vitamin D is Low – Is Yours? Why “normal” Isn’t Always Optimal

by | Feb 24, 2025 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

As a functional medicine practitioner, I regularly check my own labs – because prevention is key. My latest results revealed something eye-opening: My vitamin D is low (23ng/mL), even though I focus on a healthy lifestyle.

Why This Matters

Vitamin D is critical for:

  • Immune function (helps fight infections & autoimmunity)
  • Reducing inflammation (low levels may worsen pain, fatigue, and chronic disease)
  • Bone and muscle health
  • Blood sugar regulation

Most conventional doctors consider 30 ng/mL “normal”, but in functional medicine, optimal levels are 50-80 ng/mL. That’s why I’m correcting mine – and why you might need to check yours.

What I’m Doing to Fix It

  1. Sun Exposure – More midday sunlight, as UVB rays trigger natural vitamin D production.
  2. Supplementation – Adding vitamin D3 with K2 for better absorption.
  3. Testing & Tracking – Retesting in a few months to ensure I reach optimal levels.

What About You?

Many people are low in vitamin D and don’t know it. If you struggle with:

  • Fatigue
  • Frequent colds
  • Joint pain
  • Mood issues

…..it may be time to check your levels and optimize your health.
